Exciting News About Me, Dina Rasor and Truthout

Dina Rasor (left) and Maya Schenwar.

Dear Friends,

I hope 2013 is treating you well so far! I have some exciting news to share with all of you: I’ll soon begin writing a book for Berrett-Koehler Publishers, about the disconnect between prisoners and the rest of society. It’ll look at how that disconnect impedes rehabilitation and endangers public safety, increasing crime and recidivism. Plus, I’ll be exploring alternative justice approaches that facilitate integration and connection. The book aligns closely with Truthout’s mission of both exposing deep injustices and introducing transformative ideas, on a topic that’s largely ignored by corporate media.

Since this project will absorb quite a bit of my energy, I will be taking a partial leave of absence from my Executive Director position at Truthout, beginning on March 1. During this time, I’ll continue doing some limited work with the organization, and will also continue to serve on Truthout’s Board of Directors. I will return to my full-time duties in March 2014.

During this time, Dina Rasor will be serving as Truthout’s Acting Executive Director. Dina is an accomplished investigative journalist, author, and founder of the Project on Government Oversight, a renowned independent government watchdog group, which has been a crucial good government advocate for more than 30 years. Dina has written the Solutions column on Truthout for the past two and a half years. I’m very happy that Dina has agreed to take on this position and I know she’ll do a tremendous job!

I am so honored and grateful to be a part of this Truthout community, along with all of you. Thank you so much for supporting us in our work to dig up truth and point the way toward justice!

All the best,
Maya Schenwar
Executive Director
