Spitting in the Face of the Poor

Dear Readers,

The right wing is playing its usual part. Race-bait and attack the poor to justify cutting taxes for the rich. Push laws that disenfranchise young voters. Crack down on health services for women who can’t otherwise afford care. Blame teachers and unions for systemic failures in education. Turn a blind eye to the slow-moving tidal wave sweeping Americans out of their homes and into poverty.

In their hearts, most Americans favor compassion over destruction. If we cast light on the real issues at hand – and show how human lives are being harmed by toxic right-wing tactics – real progress can be made. However, without an independent counterweight against the sanitized mainstream media and the massive right-wing noise machine, the current right-wing agenda will look tame compared to what they’ll try in the future.

The demographics are on the side of those who care for their neighbors’ health and welfare. But we must have a strong communication network. Please help keep Truthout in this fight! We’re reaching new readers and breaking crucial stories every day, and with your support we cannot be stopped.

The future of independent journalism is uncertain, and the consequences of losing it are too grave to ignore. To ensure Truthout remains safe, strong, and free, we need to raise $46,000 in the next 7 days. Every dollar raised goes directly toward the costs of producing news you can trust.

Please give what you can — because by supporting us with a tax-deductible donation, you’re not just preserving a source of news, you’re helping to safeguard what’s left of our democracy.
