He served 18 years in the California legislature, where he chaired labor, higher education and natural resources committees. He is the author and editor of twenty books, including the recently published "Inspiring Participatory Democracy: Student Movements from Port Huron to Today" (Paradigm, 2012). In 2009 he co-curated the volunteer show at The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, entitled "Meanwhile... At 594 Broadway." In 2011, he collaborated with Ellis Rosen on a short story about Aaron Lansky and the recovery of Yiddish literature in the graphic novel "Yiddishkeit." From 2009 to 2012 he worked as an animator, editor and producer for an advertising company in Manhattan. Since then, he has been working to complete animated segments for a documentary about plant diversity, entitled "The Inheritance of Loss."

He has just completed work which will be seen in the forthcoming movie "Diving Normal," based on the award-winning play by Ashlin Halfnight. He has done several comic adaptations (with Marlow) of speeches by Tom Hayden.
