BARBARA'S DAILY BUZZFLASH MINUTE

[BuzzFlash Note: Barbara gets a vacation! Look for her next column July 16.]

A little here, a little there, democracy is being undermined everywhere! Are we really willing to repeat past history? Do we really want to wonder, when all is said and done, when democracy is obliterated, how did this happen? Are we really willing to travel the same road as the Germans during the reign of Hitler and the Nazis? "Never again" is indeed happening all over again, right here, right now, in the United States of America! "Even though Congress and the Justice Department's own inspector general determined that several of Edmond's complaints about abuse and incompetence had merit, she lost a lawsuit against the FBI. When she appealed, this strange scene took place: 'My attorney stood up and argued the case about the state secret's privilege. Then the court asked [us] to step out of the court ... while the government argued its side. Can they do this? This is the United States of America. The guards escorted us out and they locked the doors. We don't know what [the FBI attorneys] told the judges. My attorneys could never know what they argued. As far as we know, they could have made the most outrageous lies. There was no one there to challenge them.'"

Corruption and dirty politics is nothing new in America. However, the level and scope of dirty politics within the Republican Party at this point in American history seems to be unprecedented! It increasingly looks like the Republican leadership has become a kind of Mafia-style criminal gang pretending to be a political party.

There are two ways to look at the growing confrontation between Congress and the White House over access to information.

Either the administration is suckering Congress into a fight, confident that the Democratic Congress will back down and forever surrender its role as a co-equal branch of government; or that it will bring its contempt citations to federal court and lose, thanks to all those right-wing Federalist judges that Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II have stacked the judiciary with from bottom to top.

People For the American Way Foundation filed an amicus curiae brief in support of the school districts in the case.

Joe Brewer: The Coming Biofuels Disaster

A BUZZFLASH GUEST CONTRIBUTION
by Joe Brewer

Have you ever tried to solve a problem only to discover that you made things worse in the process? This is happening right now with biofuels. We are on the road to disaster because the problem we are trying to solve has been framed inadequately. Harmful impacts from large-scale biofuel production are largely overlooked. And we aren't even addressing the right problem! The truth can be seen when we frame issues in the context of livability.

Public health officials in Indiana are busy doing what Idaho public health officials did two years ago: claiming a cluster of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) victims is a mere coincidence.
