A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW
I'm going to tell you right now it's a tough challenge, but a lot of things are tough. Tougher than the challenge of taking down an incumbent is the challenge of getting up every day and struggling with how you're going to meet your mortgage or your rent, or take care of your children and your parents as they age, and see that you get health care, and have an environment that means we have clean air to breathe, and we leave the earth in a better condition than when we found it.

... what Obama was addressing was not just race or just the nature of politics. The great speeches address who we are as people, what it means to be a human being.

I think what has happened with Jeremiah Wright is that, whatever you think of him, and however unfair the media has been to him, he has given the right a way to mobilize resentment against Barack Obama that they never had before ... [Wright] is presented as the quintessential angry black man that the right wing loves to incite hatred against. So Sean Hannity is running with this as far as he can.

I think it's fair to say that they are not just playing the "race card," but they're trying to combine race and fear. This is the thing that probably pushed me over the edge with the Clintons. ... They see race as an effective button to push to move people in their direction, to create doubt. And that was the whole Rove thing, to create enough doubt that people go back to their default positions and their belief systems. ... They're using fear to put them where they want to be.

Some conservatives want to blame it all on George W. Bush, and they say, no, it's not our fault. He's the one who betrayed the conservative movement. That is just a cop-out, because George Bush could not have done anything that he did without the support of the conservatives who controlled the House and the Senate and the Supreme Court at the time. In fact, he wouldn't even have been President without them. ...

I think they have ruined the economy. They've ruined the country. They've ruined our image around the world. And they've ruined the conservative brand name. I don't think they can or should ever be trusted with power again.

It's funny that, with all the claims of how successful the surge is, you haven't seen a big surge in the amount of on-the-ground reporting by American journalists. You would think, if things were so calm there, that you'd be getting a tremendous surge in the on-the-scene reporting by Americans. But they still seem to be mainly relying on their Iraqi staffers. That seems to be a tip-off that things are not so hunkey-dory.

It's sort of astonishing how many lobbyists and religious right operatives who claim to be these heroes of Christianity have worked so closely and become so entwined over the years with Reverend Moon, whose central message is that Jesus Christ was a failure, and that Moon had to be sent by God to make up for Jesus' bungling God's mission.

A great many of these television ministries adhere to [the] prosperity doctrine. ... [in] this type of theology, this little faith, prosperity theology, poverty is seen as a curse. The person who is in poverty is seen as not having enough faith, and that's why they're poor. So it fits in very nicely with Republican economic ideology in the sense that, it's up to you to become rich.

The independent media is a treasure, and we understand how important it is to access independent media to be able to have a viewpoint that is unadulterated by the commercial interests. ... There are many people who are trying to get out independent messages. I know BuzzFlash is one of them. Cherish those outlets, because they're the key to maintaining whatever semblance of a democracy we still have. ...

The post hoc, ergo propter hoc argument that you hear politicians make all the time is, they tell you that 85% of heroin addicts started with marijuana, so marijuana is a gateway drug. And apparently that's true, that 85% of heroin addicts started with marijuana. But 100% started with milk.
