A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW

I was a woman and in the Air Force. ... I ... understood that the reason why the American military is the proudest and the most fierce fighting force on the planet is because we feel like we’re doing a legitimate job for a legitimate government.  When you look at why the Iraqis won’t fight, they don’t feel like they’re legitimate, and they don’t feel they’re fighting for a legitimate government.  ... Plus, I can’t imagine being on foreign soil making thirteen hundred dollars a month, with a family at home, car payments and house payments and the whole nine yards, and serving next to a guy who’s getting eighty grand to pump gas.  In my military experience, that can’t happen. You don’t serve alongside somebody who’s making eighty grand to put the gas in the vehicle.  I put the gas in the plane.  I put the jet fuel in the plane.  I put the oxygen in the airplane.  I can’t imagine having to serve with somebody who is making a fricking fortune and is on the payroll of the company, not the country.  That screws up the entire camaraderie, the entire feeling that you are a legitimate fighting force. All of a sudden, you see it’s for profit, and you don’t feel legitimate anymore.

The arguments that are put forth by the conservatives on my program are the arguments that progressives encounter constantly out there in the world.

People ask me: Are they going to steal the 2008 election? No, they’ve already stolen the 2008 election. We still have a chance of swiping it back, but the reason I’ve expanded and put out the new edition of Armed Madhouse is to tell you how they will steal in 2008, and what to do about it. That’s one of the main new things. Plus a special chapter on New Orleans and my bust down there.

In this country, putting up political dissent is the same as waving a flag. Any country in the world will let you stick up a flag. But this is America, and what makes America different is we’re allowed to put up a sign that says impeach -- a sign that says impeach, over a freeway, is just as patriotic as a flag. After 9/11, that was a time to put flags up on freeways. This is the time to put up signs that say: "Impeach this president who lies."

You can win big by running on progressive politics, by dealing with economic class issues in a very strong way. ... The American people say it is wrong that the gap between the very rich, and everybody else, is growing wider and wider and wider.

Really, when they complained that we had not fought the Vietnam War forcefully enough, they didn’t mean because we didn’t put enough forces in. They didn’t blame Johnson or the Pentagon. They blamed the left. They blamed the counterculture. They said that American culture had been feminized. ... From their point of view, what happened abroad was really a reflection of what was happening here at home. And we have the same language now, particularly from Cheney, but from Bush as well. ... Their own fears of moral weakness are being played out on this international scale.

Words like judicial activism and judicial restraint have absolutely no meaning. If I have a liberal court, I want to see judicial activism. I want to see them go out and do things. If there’s a conservative court, I want to see judicial restraint, so they can’t do too much damage. The language that the Rehnquist Court and the conservatives have used over the last decades accusing the Warren Court of being too judicially active, and that they’re restrainers, is nonsense. The Rehnquist Court struck down more federal legislation than any other Court before it.

Someone who is deeply linked to the Christian right, and to the current Administration, has turned around and started what has become the world's most powerful private mercenary army. These guys are like neo-Crusaders. To have them on the government payroll to the tune of $750 million, operating in a Muslim country, should be frightening to everyone who understands that.

I believe that we’re close to a tipping point right now. What happened to the Soviet Union between 1989 and 1991 could easily be happening to us for essentially the same reasons. Imperial overreach, inability to reform, rigid economic ideology. ... The world’s balance of power didn’t change one iota on September 11, 2001. The only way we could lose the power and influence we had at that time was through our own actions, and that’s what we did.

Rumsfeld came to Baghdad to shake hands with Saddam, even as the tortures and executions were going on. The Americans knew full well what kind of a tyrant they were dealing with, but they wanted him in their camp. -- Barry M. Lando, author of Web of Deceit
