BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi released a letter to her Democratic colleagues this afternoon announcing that she will run to become House Democratic Leader in the next Congress.

Excerpt from her letter to Democratic colleagues:

"Our work is far from finished.  As a result of Tuesday's election, the role of Democrats in the 112th Congress will change, but our commitment to serving the American people will not.  We have no intention of allowing our great achievements to be rolled back. It is my hope that we can work in a bipartisan way to create jobs and strengthen the middle class

"Many of our colleagues have called with their recommendations on how to continue our fight for the middle class, and have encouraged me to run for House Democratic Leader.  Based on those discussions, and driven by the urgency of protecting health care reform, Wall Street reform, and Social Security and Medicare, I have decided to run."

This news release provided by the office of the Speaker of the House.

BUZZFLASH ALERT

Thanks for the hundreds of E-mails of concern.

Yes, for the first time in 10 1/2 years, BuzzFlash was hacked on Saturday afternoon.  As a result, Google, which does occasional scans of sites, issued a warning to readers that "malware" -- or essentially viruses -- might be present on some sections of BuzzFlash.  Working all afternoon and into the early morning of Sunday, our new indefatigable team of IT specialists at Truthout worked to remove the hacked material and close the security hole that was exploited.

Meanwhile, we kept the site maintained as usual with our special brand of progressive content and posted headlines on Truthout and joined as we daily do in our joint e-mail. No hacker is going to keep BuzzFlash or Truthout from moving forward.

It may take a couple of days or more for Google to rescreen the site and remove the warnings, but we will update the site as always.  We've published every day for 10 1/2 years and our record will continue.

We thank you for your patience.

BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

The following is a news release from the office of Senator Bernie Sanders, also a BuzzFlash reader.

Forty-four million people in the United States, one in seven Americans, lived in poverty in 2009. The number increased 4 million from the year before, the Census Bureau reported today.

“While poverty is increasing and the middle class is declining, it is incomprehensible to me that Senate Republicans are pushing for more tax breaks for the rich,” Sen. Bernie Sanders said. “Senate Republicans should not be allowed to hold middle class tax cuts hostage in order to give more tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires – especially when the gap between the very rich and everyone else is growing wider.”

Measuring the impact of the worst recession since the 1930s, the stark statistical snapshot by the Census Bureau showed that the median income of all families declined by $337 from 2008 to 2009, and well below the levels of the late 1990s, another sign that Americans are working for lower wages.  Middle-class families have seen their incomes go down by over $2,600 over the past decade going from $52,388 in 1999 to $49,777 in 2009 after adjusting for inflation. Middle-class families earned more income in 1998 than they did in 2009.

BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

According to the AP: "Former eBay executive Meg Whitman is defending $119 million in contributions she has made to her campaign for California governor — a personal spending rate that has now surpassed that of any other political candidate in American history.

Whitman's campaign this week reported another $15 million contribution from the billionaire GOP candidate in her bid to defeat Democratic Attorney General Jerry Brown."

BuzzFlash suggested the other day in a headline that Whitman just auction herself for the California governor's office on eBay. A BuzzFlash reader was inspired to help her out by creating her eBay candidacy auction:

mw

Just a few weeks left to bid, will likely cost more than $150 million dollars, given what she has personally spent.

BUZZFLASH ALERT

The following is a news release from Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is also a BuzzFlash Reader:

WASHINGTON, September 13 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the longest serving independent in Congress, today disagreed with the other Senate independent, Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.), on renewing Bush-era tax cuts for the rich and he blasted Republican plans to filibuster middle-class tax cuts.

“At a time when this nation has a $13 trillion national debt and a widening gap between the very rich and everyone else, the dumbest thing we could possibly do is to provide hundreds of billions of dollars in tax breaks to some of the wealthiest people in America,” Sanders said.

Sanders also commented on Senate Republicans’ plans to filibuster any effort to renew soon-to-expire Bush administration tax cuts for the middle class unless tax breaks also are renewed for the wealthiest taxpayers.

“It is an outrage that the Republican leader in the Senate has pledged to filibuster legislation that would provide tax relief to 98 percent of American workers and their families.  The Democratic leadership has got to stand up to this filibuster no matter how long it takes.

The following is a news release from Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is also a BuzzFlash Reader:

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today pressed for President Obama to name consumer advocate and Harvard Professor Elizabeth Warren to head a new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau created by the new Wall Street reform law.

Elizabeth has played a great role in standing up to Wall Street. Given that the outrageous greed, recklessness and illegal behavior on Wall Street caused the horrendous recession that we are still suffering through, it is absolutely necessary that we have a strong, smart consumer advocate who will look out for their needs as the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau,” Sanders said.

BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

The following is an August 9th news release from FreePress.net about the betrayal of Google, in its violation of net neutrality, with Verizon.

"“This is not real Net Neutrality. And this pact would harm the millions of Americans who have pleaded with our leaders in Washington to defend the free and open Internet. President Obama, Congress and the FCC should reject this deal, restore the authority of the agency that’s supposed to protect Internet users, and safeguard Net Neutrality once and for all.”

In response to Google and Verizon’s “policy framework” unveiled today, MoveOn.Org Civic Action, Credo Action, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, ColorofChange.org and Free Press, all members of the SavetheInternet.com Coalition, issued the following joint statement:

"The Google-Verizon pact isn’t just as bad as we feared — it’s much worse. They are attacking the Internet while claiming to preserve it. Google users won’t be fooled.

"They are promising Net Neutrality only for a certain part of the Internet, one that they’ll likely stop investing in. But they are also paving the way for a new 'Internet' via fiber and wireless phones where Net Neutrality will not apply and corporations can pick and choose which sites people can easily view on their phones or any other Internet device using these networks.

BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

Last night, the Senate GOP refused to confirm numerous judicial nominees who have been waiting months for up-or-down votes, including several who were approved unanimously by the Senate Judiciary Committee.  The Senate confirmed four judges, and agreed to move forward on one more, but refused to act on seventeen more nominees, nine of whom were approved by voice vote or unanimous roll-call vote in the Judiciary Committee.

“The level of obstruction being displayed by the GOP is jaw dropping,” said Marge Baker, Executive Vice President at People For the American Way.  “It’s clear that Republican Senators are intent on grinding judicial nominations to a halt.  Throughout the Bush Administration, Republicans stacked the Courts with judges willing to twist the law to favor corporate interests over the rights of individual Americans.  Now, Republican Senators don’t want to confirm judges who will stand up for the law.”

In addition to refusing to vote on judges, the GOP sent several nominations back to the White House, requiring that they be re-nominated by the President and re-approved by the committee.  Although the process can’t block confirmation of nominees, it does eat up weeks of time.

BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

BuzzFlash couldn't agree more with the following news release from the office of Senator Bernie Sanders, a BuzzFlash reader.

WASHINGTON, July 20 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) urged President Obama to pick Elizabeth Warren to be the first director of a new consumer protection bureau.

Obama on Wednesday plans to sign into law a bill overhauling financial regulations that would create the new Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection.

In a letter sent to the White House on Monday, Sanders wrote that “at a time when doubts about Wall Street and its practices run very deep … American consumers need a federal government that is looking after their best interests.”

Sanders acknowledged that some senators may oppose Warren. “Good!” he wrote. “It will allow for a serious debate as to the role that government should play in protecting the American people against the outrageous behavior we have seen on Wall Street.”
