For all of you elitist liberals out there planning on spending Tax Day watching YouTube for uploads of violent, racist teabaggers from the comfort of your desktop, beware that a bunch of elitist liberals plan on ruining your fun.
The Associated Press published a piece yesterday about CrashTheParty.org, a group planning to "infiltrate and dismantle the [tea party] group by trying to make its members appear to be racist, homophobic, and moronic."
Note to the party crashers: It's been done.
Despite the sometimes positive coverage from mainstream media outlets, it's clear to any casual observer that the tea party crowd is generally dominated by "racist, homophobic and moronic" people.
They say their plans are to "exaggerate their least appealing qualities (misspelled protest signs, wild claims in TV interviews, etc.)" to further alienate them from mainstream America. The group's website is headlined with an enigmatic (or poorly constructed) call to action:
Let's get to work. This Tea Party isn't going to destroy itself... Or is it?
Ahem. Allow me to answer that question for you: Yes! And they were doing fine on their own!
The problem was not that the tea party was keeping its craziness under wraps. The problem was not that there weren't enough crazy, racist people at these rallies for news crews and filmmakers to interview.
And now the problem is you people.
If tea partiers and the media know that tea party impostors are going to be at the April 15 rallies, all of the pointing-out-how-crazy-these-people-are that we've been doing will be for naught. The tea party organizers can now blame every nut job threatening to kill liberals (after all, we all know that "the only good librul is a dead librul") on interlopers such as you.
Part of my objection to the party crashers' plans is totally selfish. After all, he's ruining all the fun for the rest of us! Next time I see a woman on Medicare raging against government-run healthcare and death panels, I won't know if it's genuine.
It would have been one thing if the plan was carried out discreetly. But why would you do an interview with the Associated Press to tell them about what you're doing? I mean, the conservative blog OneNewsNow is already circulating this at the top of their e-mail alerts under the headline, "Goal: Dismantle the Tea Party movement."
Group founder Jason Levin has already been attacked by those same racist homophobes he's hoping to expose. But they should be thanking him.
This allows tea partiers to wear the martyr hat (presumably on top of their tinfoil and/or teabag-bedecked, God-Bless-America caps). This is just what they needed: another reason to feel sorry for themselves. From the AP story comes evidence of this tack:
Another tea party organizer said the attempt to destroy the movement was evidence its message is resonating.
"We've been ignored, we've been ridiculed. Well, now they're coming after us," said Judy Pepenella, a co-coordinator for the New York State Tea Party. "Gandhi's quote is one we understand: 'First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win.'"
Got that guys? You're allowing them to compare themselves with Gandhi. Next thing you know they'll be bigger than Jesus.
And if you're looking for more media coverage, I don't doubt a whole gaggle of FOX News commentators would love to get you in the studio. Then they can paint you as the terrible liberal elites attacking the poor, salt-of-the-earth tea partiers. Doesn't that just fit the their narrative perfectly? In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this whole idea was cooked up by a bunch of tea partiers in search of sympathy.
So please, party crashers: Give up this folly. Call off the dogs (or unemployed actors, or whomever you've got on your party-crashing team).
You're only playing into the hands of the tea party handlers (a.k.a. FOX News and the GOP). If ever there were a better way to lend legitimacy to an illegitimate "grassroots" movement, you'll be doing so by crashing the April 15 protests.
