Truthout works to spark action by revealing systemic injustice and providing a platform for transformative ideas, through in-depth investigative reporting and critical analysis. With a powerful, independent voice, we will spur the revolution in consciousness and inspire the direct action that is necessary to save the planet and humanity.

Our Organization

Truthout is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing independent news and commentary on a daily basis. In order to remain free of bias and adhere to high editorial standards, we accept no advertising or corporate backing. Instead, we depend on our readers to support our work.     More NATO Summit Activists Charged; Five Linked by Two Informants

    Thousands protested in the streets of downtown Chicago on Sunday May 20 while the NATO Summit unfolded at McCormick Place. With most eyes on that, another key development flew under the radar, as explained in the lede sentence of a story appearing in The Chicago Tribune: "Two more men have been charged with planning to make explosives to be used during the NATO summit" at the Circuit Court of Cook County. Another man, according to a press release received by Truthout from the National Lawyer's Guild (NLG) Chicago, "was charged with felony aggravated battery on a police officer ..."

    From Pride to Shame: Vets Return Their Medals

    The transition from pride to shame was a common theme among the more than forty veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan who publicly hurled their medals in the direction of the NATO summit in Chicago on Sunday as part of a reconciliation ceremony. One by one, they explained their decision, many describing themselves as remaining proud to have served with what they considered courage, integrity and selflessness until a sense of unease about the missions' aims and tactics set in, making them now regard their participation in the wars as reprehensible, dishonorable and cause for remorse.
